Pergolide is a dopamine agonist. Dopamine controls the secretion of hormones from the pituitary gland. When dopamine is absent, the pituitary gland secretes too many hormones causing diabetes, lameness and disruptions in the immune system. Horses with PPID do not make enough dopamine. Cyproheptadine is antihistamine with anti-serotonins activity that is frequently combined with pergolide to treat PPID. Pergolide/Cyproheptadine is commonly prescribed for PPID / Cushing’s Disease.
